Tybee Island Pirate Fest 2026: A Family Guide

Somewhere around three o'clock on Saturday, October 10, a parade of pirates comes down Butler Avenue. Floats, marching units, dignitaries, the Shriners in their little cars, families and walking krews, all of it headed for South Beach. If you are staying anywhere on this stretch of Butler, you do not drive to that. You walk out the front door.

Tybee Island Pirate Fest 2026 runs October 8–11 on the Strand parking lot beside the pier. It is the island's biggest weekend of the fall and the one families ask us about most. Here is the version of it we'd give a parent at the front desk, starting with the single most important thing to get right.

Thursday night is not for kids

Opening night is the Buccaneer Ball at The Crab Shack, Thursday October 8, 6 to 10 p.m. It is ticketed, it is ages 18 and over, and the Pirate King and Queen coronation happens at 7:30. That's a good evening for adults. It is not a festival with a kids' area, and a parent who shows up Thursday looking for face painting will spend the walk back to the room explaining why.

Family programming starts Friday at 5 p.m. Put that in the calendar before you book anything.

The three public days

Admission to the festival grounds is free on all three public days, per the festival's own 2026 schedule:

• Friday, October 9: 5 to 11 p.m.
• Saturday, October 10: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
• Sunday, October 11: 12 to 4 p.m.

One caution on the money question, because it comes up every year. Search for ticket prices and you will find articles quoting a gate figure and an advance figure. Those are from previous years. The festival's current schedule page says free admission for all three days, and that is the first-party source, so go by it rather than by whatever an aggregator republished. There is also a separate wristband for alcohol in the festival zone. Check the festival site for the current details on that, because the only pages explaining the policy in any depth are years out of date and we're not going to quote them at you.

The grounds sit in the Strand parking lot next to the pier, at the South Beach end of the island. That is the same few blocks that hold most of Tybee's restaurants and the beach access everyone uses, which is the reason this weekend feels busy in a way an ordinary October weekend doesn't.

What there is for kids

Little Matey's Cove is the children's area, and it runs all three public days rather than just the busy one. Free face painting, a petting zoo, and a magic show appear on the schedule every day, along with the Misfits of Mayhem. Friday adds the Motley Tones. Saturday runs the longest, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and brings in Mermaid Melua. Sunday's window is short, 12 to 4 p.m., which happens to be the whole festival day on Sunday.

The Thieves Market is the shopping half of the weekend, open Friday, Saturday and Sunday: pirate wares, costumes, and arts and crafts. If your kid is going to want a cutlass, budget for a cutlass.

A few other things worth knowing about the schedule. The Tybee Mermaid Water Show runs Friday and Sunday. There's live music on the main stage across all three days. And the adult costume contest lands Saturday from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., which is a fine thing to watch with a nine-year-old and a reasonable moment to start thinking about dinner. The grounds stay open until 11 on Friday and Saturday, well past small-kid bedtime, so treat the late hours as optional rather than as the part you're missing.

If you can only do one stretch of the weekend with young children, make it Saturday between late morning and the end of the parade. Little Matey's Cove is open the whole time, the parade is at 3, and you can be back and showered before the grounds turn into an evening event.

The parade, and where to watch it

The Pirate Victory Parade is Saturday, October 10, from 3 to 5 p.m., down Butler Avenue toward South Beach.

That route is why we like this event more than we probably should. We're at 1409 Butler, which puts the parade within a block or two of our front door. Curbside on Butler is the whole game here. There is no premium vantage point to hunt for and no ticketed grandstand to buy into. You find a patch of shade, you sit down on the curb, and the parade comes to you.

Two practical notes. The nearer you get to the South Beach end, the denser the crowd, because that's where the route ends and the festival grounds are. If you want room for a stroller and a cooler, stand farther up Butler, away from the pier. And a two-hour parade window means the front of it passes any given spot long before five, so be in place by 2:45 rather than drifting down at 3:30.

Parking, traffic, and the shuttle

The honest advice for this weekend is to not move your car.

Island public parking is $4.00 an hour, enforced 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year, paid through an app or a kiosk. The city doesn't take cash. The festival doesn't publish its own parking rate that we can point you to, so assume you are paying the island rate and paying it for a while, because a festival day is not a two-hour errand.

The festival does run a free shuttle on Friday and Saturday. We're deliberately not printing pickup points or times, because the only specific times we could find come from a comment on a webpage rather than from the organisers. Check the festival's directions page for the current shuttle details before you rely on it.

Then there's the parade itself. Whatever the official traffic plan turns out to be, a parade route is not a driving route, and between 3 and 5 on Saturday, Butler is the parade route. Be parked before then, wherever you are staying. If you have to drive somewhere Saturday afternoon, do it in the morning and come back.

Where to stay for it

The case for staying on the island for Pirate Fest is not subtle: the festival is a walking event held in a parking lot, and everyone who drives in has to solve the parking problem you avoided by walking.

We're Dunes Inn & Suites, 54 rooms across two buildings at 1409 Butler Ave, a short walk from South Beach. Parking in our lot is free for guests, one car per room, which for this particular weekend is the amenity that matters most. The walk from our lot to the festival grounds is well under half a mile down Butler, and the parade passes on the way.

A few room notes for family groups. The Mini Suite sleeps six on two queen beds plus a sleeper sofa, and the two-bedroom, one-bath apartment also sleeps six, so a bigger crew fits in one reservation rather than two rooms down the hall from each other. The 2 Queen Beds with Kitchenette room has a mini-fridge, microwave, and stovetop, which is a useful thing when the festival grounds are the only food option within sight and there are four people wanting breakfast at eight in the morning. We don't serve breakfast on site. Pets are available upon request rather than automatic, so ask us when you book instead of arriving with the dog and hoping. If we're full, the island is small and it fills up for this weekend, so the realistic fallback is Savannah, about 20 minutes up US-80. That works. It just puts you back in the car and back in the parking problem at both ends of every festival day.

The fall break wrinkle

One thing out-of-town families should know: this is not just a festival weekend, it's the local school break. Savannah-Chatham County students are out October 8, 9 and 12, which means Friday is a day off for island and Savannah families and Monday is a day off too. Expect local families in the crowd, and expect the weekend to have long-weekend gravity rather than ordinary-Saturday gravity.

That cuts both ways. Crowds, yes. But if you're bringing kids of your own, you're arriving in a weekend the whole area has already cleared its calendar for.

What else to do that weekend

Pirate Fest is four hours on Sunday and twelve on Saturday, and nobody needs all of it. The beach is still the beach in early October, and lifeguards stay on duty daily through October 31, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. A morning on the sand before the grounds open at 11 on Saturday is the best-value hour of the weekend.

For a break from the noise, head to the island's north end for the lighthouse and the Marine Science Center, or drive fifteen minutes back up US-80 to Fort Pulaski, which is where we'd go on Sunday morning before the festival's short final day. On food: the restaurants nearest the grounds are the ones everyone at the festival will also be considering. StingRay's is a tenth of a mile from us and Pier 16 sits down at the pier, minutes from the grounds either way. Eat early, eat late, or walk a few blocks away from the pier. There's also a carnival at Hotel Tybee running October 8–11. It appears on the festival's schedule with a note that it isn't a festival-run event, and its hours hadn't been announced when we wrote this, so treat it as a maybe rather than a plan.
